The Argentinian arrived from Parma on a free transfer this summer, but has so far yet to feature for the Rossoneri in Serie A.

“Could Mauri leave in January?” Dino Zampacorta considered in an interview with MilanNews.

“There’s that possibility for Jose Mauri, as there is for many other Rossoneri players. Right now the team is going through difficulties, which I hope will be resolved as soon as possible.

“If not, there may be some departures, and not just young players. We could possibly talk to the club to decide what to do next in terms of the transfer market.

“The player has been strongly backed by the club hierarchy, so any decision will be taken peacefully together with the club.

“That said, if things keep going with too many spells on the bench or in the stands then it’s normal that we’ll talk.

“From here to January so many things could change.

“If he started to feel the confidence of the Coach [Sinisa Mihajlovic], get a few moments of game-time, then play as a starter the next time if deserves it, it’s obvious the player wouldn’t be looking around.

“Jose loves football, he loves being able to show what he can do, he can prove himself to be an important player.

“I think he can fit into most schemes. If he doesn’t play because the Coach doesn’t think he’s suitable – or not yet suitable – that’s another matter, in which myself and the lad would have no say.

“Let me be perfectly clear – I think the Coach is hugely intelligent, well-prepared and serious. We know that perfectly well.”

The Diavolo have switched between a 4-3-1-2, a 4-3-3 and a 4-4-2 at various points in pre-season and during the campaign so far, but Zampacorta says Mauri can adapt.

“He can play right-midfield, left-midfield or in front of the defence, which is his natural role, where he’s always played and where he won the youth Scudetto with Parma.

“So he can play in a 4-3-3, a 4-4-2 and a 4-3-1-2, he can do any role. In the youth teams he even played as a central-defender, with excellent results.

“Some have compared him to [Barcelona’s Javier] Mascherano, because of his ability to play anywhere.

“He came through playing in front of the defence, but he grew up playing over 30 games in Serie A, on both the right and left of midfield [at Parma].

“It was just an intuition [Coach Roberto] Donadoni had.”
