Lorenzo Insigne’s agent says the Napoli man must be “protected” from tough tackles on his knee.

The Italian international missed most of last season with a cruciate ligament injury, and has taken  number of blows to the same knee in recent weeks, including Sunday’s match with Chievo.

“I hope these repeated hits to the knee are just a coincidence,” Antonio Ottaiano told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.

“Certainly players like Lorenzo should be protected, it happened to [Roberto] Baggio and [Alessandro] Del Piero too.

“Certain challenges should be punished more harshly, if the leg strikes the knee it can be dangerous. We hope these incidents won’t be repeated.”

Despite the alleged rough treatment, Ottaiano hopes his client will play for the Partenopei when Palermo visit San Paolo tonight.

“I’m biased, and the Coach will decide, but if I were the Coach then the talented players would always play.

“He’s managed to be more well-rounded in front of goal, the numbers speak for themselves. We’re confident about reaching double-figures in the League, but don’t forget, in his favoured position [trequartista] he’s often got near 20 goals.

“The anomaly has come in recent years, where he hasn’t had the chance to express himself in the way that suits him best.”
