Newcastle United have already failed to snap up two Serie A stars this year but could finally get their man with Milan talisman Sandro Tonali.
The Magpies are in the midst of a meteoric rise after the takeover of Saudi wealth fund PIF, securing a fourth-place finish and Champions League football in their first full season after the completion of the deal back in October 2021.
Serious investments are now being made in the squad and Newcastle have looked to Serie A to try and close the gap to the top teams in the Premier League.
Back in January, the English side submitted an €100m offer for Napoli ace Victor Osimhen, a deal that was quickly rejected as the team fought for the third Scudetto in their history. Aurelio De Laurentiis recently made it clear that offers above €150m would be needed to pry the Nigerian from Campania.
Newcastle returned to Italian shores recently to register their interest in Inter star Nicolo Barella. A €60m bid was proposed, but this was clearly far below the mark, and it quickly became apparent that it would be impossible to pick up the midfielder.
Now Newcastle have returned with their sights set on a different Serie A star, Tonali. The 23-year-old Italian is a core part of the Milan squad and played a crucial role in their recent Scudetto success. Their €60m offer was rejected by the Rossoneri, but a new proposal is expected to arrive soon.
Reports in Italy suggest that Milan are open to negotiating the sale of Tonali to Newcastle, who would give the midfielder a significantly more lucrative deal compared to his current contract in the Lombardy capital.
