Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis warns “over-rated” Nikola Maksimovic and points to Gonzalo Higuain’s €94m clause.

The patron spoke to the media after last night’s 3-1 win over Sassuolo, which keeps them at the top of the Serie A table.

“It is nice to be four points clear of Inter,” smiled De Laurentiis.

“I put the €94m release clause into Higuain’s contract because I know how to evaluate players. Now he has 20 goals in 20 Serie A games.

Juventus are scarier than Inter in the Scudetto race, as it’s a serious club with an undeniable past success rate. Inter still need to work out their recent issues.”

Napoli want to be active in the January transfer market, but De Laurentiis warned his patience with Torino is running thin.

“We already have a strong squad, so it’s difficult to improve it. I gave my all-clear to buy someone who is truly functional for the project.

“I am already tired of Maksimovic, as he’s worth €10m and is over-rated at €25m. We reached €18m and they still said no. Let’s see if we can reach €20m, just because he’s young and I think he can help us in future.”

An alternative is Empoli defender Federico Barba.

“I don’t dislike him. We also have to see what character a player has, whether he can play at the San Paolo against a big club.

“Transfer windows can be very tricky, as bringing in someone who doesn’t know Italian football can be counter-productive. It’s better to have someone who is already well-versed and knows the Coach.”
