Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis suggested starting the Serie A season in a major European city, because “most of the Italian fans are at the beach.”

The conversation occurred after a meeting with Chinese authorities to sign a synergy agreement, although Lega Serie A President Gaetano Miccichè made clear it would not mean Serie A matches played in China.

“That isn’t something to be considered for at least the next few years. We could talk about the Super Cup or some Coppa Italia games.”

De Laurentiis came up with a slightly different plan for getting more people in the stands for August fixtures.

“The month of August could be a good opportunity to play a few Serie A games around Europe. Why not start the Serie A season in Paris, London, Berlin, Madrid or Barcelona?

“It wouldn’t be a betrayal of the fans, because at the end of the day most of them would be at the beach and far away from their home towns.”
