ADL: ‘Scudetto still possible’

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis believes the Scudetto is still possible – “all we need are a few Juventus missteps”.

The Partenopei have closed the gap at the top of Serie A to four points, and are still hopeful of dethroning the Old Lady after seven years.

“In football everything is possible, all we need are a few Juventus missteps and we’re there,” De Laurentiis told reporters outside today’s FIGC elections.

“Napoli have started a new path, I always talk about three-year cycles and and this year, using all the players, we’ll be fine.

“We’re definitely dealing with a group from Hell in the Champions League, but we have to have the skill and luck to progress in the competition.

“In the league we’ve had a start which was more difficult and complex than the others, but we’ve acquitted ourselves well.”

The Partenopei have a new Coach this season, with Carlo Ancelotti replacing Maurizio Sarri despite a record points total last term.

“Some perhaps misunderstood his arrival, I heard things which were a bit dismissive and even rude…

“They said that Ancelotti had come to Napoli to retire, you can’t say that! He’s a great Coach who has won everything, and you certainly can’t rebuke him at 59, even at 70 he’d have wanted to come.

“There was immediate sympathy, clarity, and positive energy between us right from the first meeting, it took us five minutes to draw up the contract, there was never any doubt on either side.

“I was prepared to give him nine or 10 games to settle but he didn’t even need that.

“Sarri? I don’t watch Sarri anymore. He’s a great Coach, and I wish him well in England. He gave what he could to Napoli and we didn’t win anything with him, unfortunately.

“But I think in life there are those who play for themselves and others for the job for which they were hired. I think that’s all I have to say…”
