Aurelio De Laurentiis said Maurizio Sarri is “locked down to Napoli for five years” and explained the Walter Mazzarri split.

The President spoke to Radio Radio in Rome and compared the club to his other job as a movie producer.

“I always worked to give the public what it wanted and I do the same in football for those who come to the stadium.

“If there’s one thing I know how to do, it’s write contracts, because I come from a much more complex world of cinema. I take the same approach in sport.

“Sarri has a contract with four options, which basically means he’s locked down for the next five years. As love affairs can come to an end and it’s not right to continue holding on to people who no longer love you, these options also give a guarantee to break it off.

“In my life I have never forced anyone to work with me. I believe that people who have a common goal do not need contracts, as they are more about guarantees for the company and protection for what may come.”

Nonetheless, former Coach Mazzarri walked away from Napoli after putting off signing a new contract.

“If a crazy person comes along, as happened with me and Mazzarri… I told him that he was appreciated here and I realised he wanted to go elsewhere, but his job was not finished at Napoli.

“I have to say Mazzarri was a great professional and respected his commitments. He took us a long way.”

Rafa Benitez left by mutual consent this summer when his contract expired and Sarri has made a big impact on the squad. Can Napoli win the Scudetto?

“Napoli are aware of their strength and I always believed in this team, even when fans turned their noses up at the choice of Coach. They always want the star names.

“I did offer a lot of money to Roma for Alessio Romagnoli, but evidently he’d already given his word to Milan. Nonetheless we were convinced we’d improved the areas that were weakest over the last two seasons, in other words the defence and midfield.

“I think this season is intriguing and interesting. There’s a better Inter than in previous years, Milan are asleep and will wake eventually, Roma are very strong, so are Fiorentina and Lazio are interesting.”
