Aurelio De Laurentiis called this a “transitional season” for Napoli and therefore third place in Serie A is acceptable.

The Partenopei have mathematically missed out on the chance to catch Roma in second, so the best they can hope for is qualification into the Champions League play-off round.

They still have a shot at silverware, as Napoli will face Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia Final on May 3.

“It would’ve been better to go directly into the group phase, but we are happy because having changed a large part of the squad, the Coach and playing system this was a transitional season,” De Laurentiis told TGR Campania.

“Napoli are a top club. Don’t forget when we arrived in Serie A we weren’t even in the FIFA world ranking. After a few months we got in the top 500 and now we are in the top 30 clubs in the world.”
