ADL: ‘Napoli should change shape’

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis believes a change to 4-3-1-2 would get the best out of Manolo Gabbiadini.

The forward is expected to fill the void left by Gonzalo Higuain’s departure and Arkadiusz Milik’s injury, but has struggled to impose himself in Maurizio Sarri’s 4-3-3.

“I’m calm and serene about how the team is progressing,” De Laurentiis said on Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.

“Anything else is just pub talk, and you have to put things into context. Everyone is crucifying Gabbiadini, but he’s not to blame.

“He’s playing in a role he’s never done before, he’s been out and that hasn’t helped him from a psychological point of view.

“I think he should be given more space, but I won’t presume to make suggestions to Sarri. That said, perhaps he could benefit from the 4-3-1-2 so dear to our Coach?

“We’re a team this year though, everyone plays and we have perhaps the best midfield we’ve had, so we expect great things from them.

“It’s true that [Marek] Hamsik plays well as an outside midfielder, but [Rafa] Benitez also played him as a trequartista. We won a lot of matches and scored a lot of goals with Benitez.

“It’s true that there are certain roles Marek doesn’t like to play in, but Gabbiadini could be used in another way.

“Manolo needs to play, because I’ve seen us a bit out of form, also in terms of the vivacity of our play.”
