Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis met with Igor Tudor today to offer him the job of coach replacing Rudi Garcia, but it’s reported there was one last attempt for Antonio Conte.

The decision was made to fire Garcia after Sunday’s disastrous 1-0 home defeat to Empoli, who were in penultimate place going into the weekend.

While other contenders were mentioned, including Walter Mazzarri and Fabio Cannavaro, Tudor quickly emerged as the favourite for the job.

Multiple sources report that President De Laurentiis met with the Croatian today at his FilmAuro offices in Rome.

Tudor’s agent was not present, suggesting this is the early stage of the negotiations before getting down to the details of a contract.

However, Sportitalia transfer expert Alfredo Pedullá also claims that last night one final attempt was made to convince Conte to take the job.

It failed, as Conte has made it clear he wants to stay out for the rest of the season following the end of his Tottenham Hotspur experience, so he can spend more time with his family.

That plan could also have seen Napoli bring in former Roma and Torino sporting director Gianluca Petrachi.
