Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis claims he laughed when he discovered that Sir Alex Ferguson is interested in signing Marek Hamsik and Edinson Cavani.

Hamsik was swayed enough by the talk at the weekend to offer a reply, telling RAI Sport: "I have to admit it would be difficult to say no to Manchester United."

However, it appears De Laurentiis would be reluctant to let his two star players leave the San Paolo, at least for anything less than silly money.

However, it appears De Laurentiis would be reluctant to let his two star players leave the San Paolo, at least for anything less than silly money.

Speaking to Radio Marte, he said: "I read that Ferguson would like to buy Hamsik and Cavani for €40m. It made me laugh. Indeed we were a little bemused.

"It would be wonderful to sell them for €200m and then buy them back the year after as happened in the last transfer window.

"Unfortunately many people don't understand that the contest is important for a champion to express himself.

"I am very calm. I haven't done anything more that what the Coach asked me. Now we can be in disagreement on the players and on the quality of the signings, but you don't buy a player who immediately makes the difference.

"The example of Ibrahimovic is obvious. We must be very careful. I chose a leader as a Coach and he is the one who must tell me what he wants: who leaves and who stays."
