Italian television commentator Lele Adani is in the headlines again for his pretty spectacular description of Lionel Messi’s performance for Argentina against Croatia in the World Cup semi-final.

Former Inter, Lazio, Fiorentina and Brescia midfielder Adani had already attracted both praise and especially criticism for his obvious enthusiasm for Argentina and above all for Messi.

So when Messi twisted and turned to leave Josko Gvardiol stranded as he pulled back from the by-line to set up Julian Alvarez for 3-0, Adani let loose.

“Incredible! The dynamics of the unthinkable, that is football. Only a genius like Messi thinks of a move like that. He brings back Maradona to the football field, he even dribbles the camels in the desert! You never see him! You never catch him!

“He slaloms all the way along the by-line. There is no space, he creates it. He invents it. He dribbles everyone.

“He bestows love via a football, that is what Messi is doing. He redesigns the confines of his destiny, influencing everyone: teammates and opponents.

“His eyes are those of a child who loves football. He bestows it upon everyone, even those who do not know how to love, open your heart and say thank you that Messi is still playing for all of us to watch.”

Adani’s prosaic commentary for Italian state television RAI has even earned him interviews with channels in Argentina, but he will not be working on the World Cup Final between Argentina and either France or Morocco.
