For the second game in under a week, the Aquile had the lead and seemed to be in control only to crumble to a 2-1 defeat, as the same routine developed at SPAL.

“It hurts when you go 1-0 up and lose 2-1 with a penalty that really didn’t look like a penalty,” the centre-back told Sky Sport Italia after their Europa League defeat.

“We keep playing well and then lack something right at the end. Cluj are a physical side, they make their presence felt and have a great deal of intensity. Evidently, each of us need to find that little bit extra.

“We’ve got to keep our heads up, as it’s just the beginning and we’ve got time to improve. We must believe in ourselves, but also take a good look at ourselves and ask why we stop when others run.”
