Francesco Acerbi is tipped for an Italy call-up against Albania, a return after twice being diagnosed with cancer.

The centre-back was out of action for practically an entire year, as abnormal blood test levels saw doctors discover a testicular tumour during a routine medical in June 2013.

He had the tumour removed, but the cancer came back and was spotted early thanks to a doping test that again showed abnormal levels of a certain hormone.

Acerbi resumed playing regularly this season and even scored a Serie A goal for Sassuolo.

It’s reported the 26-year-old will receive a call-up from Antonio Conte for Italy’s friendly against Albania.

That will be played on Tuesday evening in Genoa.

Although Acerbi had previously been called up three times for senior Italy duty, he never actually got to play.

The call-ups were under Cesare Prandelli in August and September 2012.
