Francesco Acerbi admits Italy ‘should’ve done more and made Spain seem stronger’ by their lack of ‘courage’ in the 2-1 Nations League semi-final defeat.

The Azzurri had the worst possible start in Enschede, as in the opening three minutes Leonardo Bonucci was caught by a high press to allow the Yeremy Pino opener.

Ciro Immobile converted a penalty to equalise for handball, but with big saves on Davide Frattesi and Merino plus a Frattesi goal narrowly ruled offside, substitute Joselu was in the right place to meet a double ricochet and win at the 88th minute.

Acerbi was asked if, as coach Roberto Mancini said, Spain deserved the victory.

“Yes, for the two chances created, but also maybe not,” the Inter defender told RAI Sport.

“We had many passes wrong, we gave strength to an already strong Spain. We did less than we could have done. Defensively, we could have caused trouble for them. It’s hard because they have quality players, they keep the ball, and sooner or later they score. We are sorry because we must do something more.”

Italy reacted strongly to the early goal, but in the second half sat deeper and deeper, letting Spain dominate possession.

“Spain have always been the most technical team lately. Maybe they have more quality, but we are a strong side. We need to show something more and be more united.

“Normally, they keep the line high in midfield, when we attacked in the first half we were dangerous, but then we stopped. We needed more courage, maybe it’s because it’s the end of the season. We made Spain even stronger.”

Mancini changed the tactical shape of the side from the usual 4-3-3 to this 3-5-2 just hours before kick-off, but Acerbi assures that did not send the Nazionale off kilter.
“It’s not about the system, many players know how to play with a 3-5-2. Perhaps a bit of strength in the legs, they looked fresher. They always had the ball and handled it well, so on the long run we struggled. We could have done more, especially technically.”
