Sassuolo defender Francesco Acerbi says he was “a bit superficial” in his approach, before twice beating cancer.

The centre-back made his 100th consecutive start in the 1-0 win at Sampdoria this weekend, after twice overcoming testicular cancer.

“You need to lead a healthy life and have goals, always aim for the maximum,” Acerbi explained to Sky.

“Before the disease I sort of felt invincible, I was a bit superficial in the things I did. When I arrived at Milan I thought I had already made it to the top.

“It’s the details that make the difference though.”

Acerbi has formed a partnership with Paolo Cannavaro over the years, but it looks as though the veteran will be heading to China.

“If he leaves I’ll miss him. I’ve told him that in person, he’s a great player and a great man. We’ll miss him so much in the dressing room and he’ll stay in everyone’s hearts.

“We had beautiful moments together and he gave me advice to help me grow. He deserves the best.”
