Tammy Abraham’s incredible debut season with Roma should be the encouragement young English players need to make the jump to Europe.

The 24-year-old Englishman has netted 23 goals in 40 appearances across all competitions this season under Jose Mourinho, setting a new record for a player in his Giallorossi debut season, beating out the likes of Gabriel Batistuta and Vincenzo Montella.

Things looked uncertain for Abraham following Thomas Tuchel’s arrival in West London, when he began to get increasingly frozen out of the Chelsea squad. He was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal, which could have been convenient as he’d have been able to stay in his house in London, but instead he took a risk and accepted a move to Serie A.

Abraham is setting an example for young English players who are struggling to break into their Premier League first teams. Obviously this isn’t a guaranteed route to success, as seen with teammate Ainsley Maitland-Niles, but his and Fikayo Tomori’s impressive work in Serie A should be motivating to those willing to consider the jump.
