Roma striker Tammy Abraham admits: ‘I haven’t been the real me’ and promises fans will see ‘a better and stronger me’ after the World Cup break.

The England international scored his first goal since September in Roma’s 1-1 draw against Sassuolo on Wednesday night.

He had become Roma’s most prolific debutant in history in 2021-22 but has not been able to replicate the same level of performance this season, scoring just four goals across all competitions.

“Before speaking about the game [against Sassuolo], I would like just to talk to the fans, my teammates, the coach, and everyone supporting me,” Abraham told Sky Sport Italia.

“I know I haven’t been the real me, I know I haven’t been playing the best I can be, but I am human at the end of the day. I’ve been low in confidence, but today I had to show the fans I’m still me and I am still willing to fight for the team and do as much as I can for the team.

“We have one more game to go before the break and after the break, you will see a better and stronger me.”

Abraham was introduced in the second half at the Mapei Stadium last night and put Roma ahead at minute 80, but his goal was not enough to seal a victory in Reggio Emilia.

On the eve of the game, José Mourinho had commented on Abraham’s poor form, suggesting that the ex-Chelsea forward was focused on a potential call from England for the World Cup.

Abraham joined Roma in a €40m deal from Chelsea in 2021 and the Blues have an option to re-sign him for €80m at the end of the season.
