The Italian Football Federation has named former FIGC President Giancarlo Abete as commissioner of the Lega Serie A following the resignation of Mario Cicala.

Cicala had only been in the job for a number of days, but was forced to resign due to previously undisclosed links to Lazio.

This proved to be a conflict of interest and therefore Cicala was forced to resign.

Cicala had replaced Gaetano Micciche, who resigned on December 3.

Former FIGC President Abete has now been named as commissioner of the league, report news agency Ansa.

Abete was President from 2007-2014, but resigned in the wake of Italy’s early elimination from the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

He was amongst the frontrunners for the job, alongside disciplinary judge Gerardo Mastrandrea and general manager Marco Brunelli.

Abete is 69 years old.
