“As long as it is mathematically possible, we will continue to believe in a Champions League place, but meanwhile we need to defend our spot in the Europa League,” the club manager told Mediaset Premium.
“This is a difficult match today, but we know what we’re capable of and will fight it out on even terms with Napoli.”
Pepe Reina has reportedly already agreed terms with Milan to move in June, when he’ll be a free agent, raising questions on the future of Gianluigi Donnarumma.
“They are both great goalkeepers. I compliment Gigio for reaching 100 Serie A appearances. Reina has a lot of experience and won a great deal in his career, so it’ll be an interesting duel today.”
There were also reports this week of a potential exchange deal between Milan and Napoli for wingers Suso and Jose Callejon.
“Callejon is a fine player, but we have Suso and I’m holding on tight to him. Of course, if Callejon were to come to Milan as well, that’d be even better.”
Abbiati was also asked about Juventus captain Gigi Buffon’s tirade against referee Michael Oliver after a Champions League exit to Real Madrid.
“His rant is understandable and justifiable in part. Going out at the last second to a penalty like that isn’t easy to swallow, so he should be understood in the circumstances. I do think when Gigi watches the interview back, he’ll realise that he went over the line.”
