Diego Laxalt was the Genoa hero again with a last-gasp winner to deepen Chievo’s crisis at the Stadio Bentegodi.
The Flying Donkeys were very much grounded after just two points from nine rounds and hovering just above the drop zone. Fabrizio Cacciatore was still suspended after his ‘handcuffs’ gesture, though Samuel Bastien returned from his ban and Roberto Inglese shook off an injury. Genoa were fresh from a shock 2-1 victory away to third-placed Lazio, but missed Miguel Veloso, Giuseppe Rossi, Armando Izzo, Aleandro Rosi, Adel Taarabt and banned Luca Rossettini.
Goran Pandev had the ball in the net on 36 minutes, but his goal was disallowed due to an offside position. Oscar Hiljemark tested Stefano Sorrentino on a Diego Laxalt through ball.
Genoa were forced into a change just before half-time, as Andrej Galabinov limped off to make way for Gianluca Lapadula.
Chievo threatened straight after the restart, as Samuel Bastien failed to beat Mattia Perin from an Emanuele Giaccherini assist. Pedro Pereira on his Genoa debut, having previously played for rivals Sampdoria, fired over from a corner.
Ervin Zukanovic saw his free kick charged down, but deep into stoppages, Genoa snatched the winner. It was Uruguay international Laxalt again after his heroics against Lazio, this time a Darko Lazovic throw-in was knocked on and he let it bounce before smashing the left-foot strike from just inside the area.
