Former Milan player and coach Leonardo has admitted that it will be difficult for his former side to compete for the Serie A title this season, but believes that Alvaro Morata is a leader and that he is already proving his worth after his summer move from Atletico Madrid

Leonardo believes that the race for the Serie A title is wide open this season, but feels that Inter and Napoli are in with a better shot than Milan.

Leonardo admits Serie A ‘difficult’ for Milan

“The league is so difficult and open to so many teams that it’s really difficult to say who is the favourite. Inter are the reigning champions, that certainly counts given that they’ve had a lot of continuity over several years with the same coach and players,” Leonardo said.

“Napoli is showing that they’re growing. A coach like Conte, who is a proper motivator, can give players an important push beyond their usual skill.

“I see it’s a bit more difficult for Milan, they are looking for a new identity but have had a few problems. Let’s say that they are further away from winning than the others.”

Leonardo was one of many guests present for the Festival dello Sport event in Trento on Friday.

A slightly more encouraging take on Milan is their new ‘leader’, Alvaro Morata, who joined Paulo Fonseca’s project after winning the EURO 2024 title as captain of Spain over the summer.

Leonardo believes that he is already demonstrating his value to the Rossoneri coaching staff and supporters.

“I think he is already (a leader), even if he has just arrived,” Leonardo said, reported via TMW

“He knows Italy well and comes in off the back of winning the European Championship as captain, so he certainly has the strength to be a leader and he is already showing it.”
