Napoli are waiting for more information after the Poland national team announced Piotr Zielinski had been diagnosed with tonsillitis and sent home.

The midfielder had been struggling with flu symptoms over the last few days and the coach only stated he would not be taking part in their game against Latvia.

Now a formal statement from the Poland Football Federation makes clear Zielinski was diagnosed with tonsillitis by the team doctor.

Despite immediate treatment, the player’s condition did not improve enough for him to take part in training, so Zielinski has returned to his club.

Zielinski is currently in contract negotiations with Napoli, as his deal only runs to the end of the season, with Inter, Juventus and Lazio among the sides interested in snapping him up as a free agent.

He spent his entire senior career in Italy, coming to Udinese’s youth team in 2011, moving on through Empoli and joining Napoli in 2016.
