Sandro Tonali has agreed to a 10-month ban from football for his involvement in the Serie A betting scandal and he risks a severe punishment should he fail to respect the terms of the plea deal.

The 23-year-old Newcastle United midfielder has reached an agreement with the FIGC to be given a 10-month ban from football, in which he’s still allowed to train, plus a further eight months of rehabilitation activities, ranging from therapy to meetings with youth teams and amateur associations.

Tonali admitted to betting on both Brescia and Milan during his times at both clubs. His 10-month ban means his 2022-23 season is already over and he would not be able to join Italy at Euro 2024 should they qualify. His salary is set to be suspended by Newcastle for the duration of the ban.

As highlighted by Corriere dello Sport, should Tonali fail to respect the terms of his plea deal with the FIGC, then he’d be given a 48-month ban, keeping him on the sidelines for four years.
