Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis has hit out at the rule limiting clubs within Serie A to signing just two non-EU players per season during a press conference unveiling new sporting director Mauro Meluso.

While sharing his thoughts, De Laurentiis also directly called out CONI President Giovanni Malago and FIGC President Gabriele Gravina for standing by the rule.

For Malago specifically, ADL suggested that he should step down from his position given that, as he claims, ‘football finances all of Italian sport.’

Serie A sides are forbidden from signing any more than two players who don’t hold EU passports each season, a rule which De Laurentiis feels is stopping Italian teams from ‘following their own path.’

“Why do we fish less from South America?” De Laurentiis asked. “Because of the Bossi-Fini law, the one regarding non-EU citizens.

He continued: “England used to be part of Europe and now it is no longer. That should be pointed out to the Lega, therefore also to Malago and Gravina. We are the only country that can only bring in two non-EU players. It would be nice to have a conversation with them and it should be very interesting.

“Malago should be asked to step aside, given that football finances all of Italian sport. So let’s get a few more players, still respecting the Bossi-Fini Law.

“The laws never change, it slows down the whole mechanism. Clubs cannot follow their own path, because too many details prevent you from doing business.”
