Inter cut Juventus out of the title race with their first Serie A victory in Turin since 2012, decided by a Hakan Calhanoglu penalty that was retaken after a Wojciech Szczesny save.

Watch the highlights here.

Serie A Highlights: Juventus 0-1 Inter

This was a massive showdown, a head-to-head for third place and the chance to stay in the Scudetto hunt. Luca Pellegrini was suspended, with Federico Chiesa, Weston McKennie, Kaio Jorge and Marley Ake injured. Denis Zakaria returned to the bench, but Max Allegri switched to a 4-2-3-1 formation. Marcelo Brozovic was back after a calf injury and Stefan de Vrij only ready for the bench.

Lautaro Martinez was booked within a couple of minutes for a high boot that accidentally caught Manuel Locatelli in the face.

Hakan Calhanoglu’s corner had already gone out of play when Milan Skriniar’s header was palmed onto the upright by Wojciech Szczesny.

Samir Handanovic flapped at a cross so it went straight up in the air and as it came back down, Giorgio Chiellini prodded it onto the bar.

Paulo Dybala’s long-range strike dipped viciously onto the roof of the net, Handanovic had his gloves stung by Juan Cuadrado and Alvaro Morata’s header went across the face of goal from a Dusan Vlahovic cross.

Lautaro Martinez risked a second yellow card after 23 minutes for a late tackle on Chiellini, while Brozovic made a decisive block to stop Morata scoring after Cuadrado robbed Alessandro Bastoni.

Locatelli limped off in tears, as after bleeding from the forehead, he then sustained a right knee injury, replaced by Zakaria.

There was chaos just before half-time, as Morata trod on the foot of Denzel Dumfries inside the penalty area, prompting a spot-kick after a VAR review. Calhanoglu saw his terrible, central penalty parried by Szczesny and the referee gave a free kick to Juve for a supposed Calhanoglu foul on the rebound, which went into the net. However, VAR showed it had to be retaken due to Matthijs de Ligt encroachment.

At the second attempt, Calhanoglu did convert at the near bottom corner, despite Szczesny picking the right angle.

After that chaos, there were 10 minutes of added time in the first half.

Following the restart, Brozovic had to intercept a Dybala assist for Vlahovic in front of goal after a Handanovic error playing out from the back, then another desperate clearance denied Dybala a tap-in after a smart passing move.

Rabiot flung himself in the way of an Ivan Perisic counter, then set up Vlahovic to turn Skriniar and fire wide.

Zakaria came so close to an equaliser on 73 minutes, he surged forward from midfield and the ferocious strike was fingertipped onto the upright by Handanovic.

Good opportunities were ruined by heavy touches from substitutes Moise Kean and Arturo Vidal, while Tucu Correa blasted over from the edge of the box and Dybala fired straight at Handanovic.

Dybala also turned a free kick over in the final minute from a promising position.

Juve had two penalty appeals in stoppages, but Vlahovic tried to back into D’Ambrosio, while De Ligt went down screaming when Darmian only grazed his cheek with fingertips.

  1. 3 things to take away from today :
    Poor decision for the penalty.
    Poor performance by Vlahovic.
All Juves substitutes are players who I wish are gone by August.

  2. 3 things to take away from today :
    Poor decision for the penalty.
    Poor performance by Vlahovic.
All Juves substitutes are players who I wish are gone by August (minus Zakaria).

  3. Dislike both teams but a definite penalty for Inter. You step on his foot in the area then it’s a penalty. End of discussion. Didn’t need to be retaken as the goal should have counted after the save. Didn’t like the blatant cheating near the end by the Juve players trying to get a penalty and Martinez should have been off in the first half.

  4. Terrible refereeing! He was clueless and influenced by the players antics. This penalty is a joke . No wonder Italian clubs and national team are way behind the elite.

  5. Not sure why FI keeps censoring my comments whenever I post something about inter. Might as well go work for RT.
Juve didn’t put their numerous chances away so didn’t win. Inter were poor but we’ve known that for 10 games. No chance in retaining the title.

  6. Chielini missing from 1cm out sums up this club. Never mind better next year when Frittata, Danilo, Sandro, Berna and Kean are all renewed. Dybala will okay as he has met his future team who were better in terms of composure, defensively and showed grit.

  7. The follow up on the second penalty is comedy gold. The most overrated defender along with Harry Maguire was in the 18 yard box so what is the complaint. Danilo falling over the GK and Rabiot putting the ball in the net made it easy. It is either a goal or a retake.

  8. The best performance by Juventus this year Vs one of the poorest of Inter and you loose.
Historical Juventus those kind of matches winning them before even the match begin. How small team has become these five last years

  9. Juventus not winning tonight was obvious. They have not won against any top 4 side this year and could not handle the 7th best in Spain even at home. Inter have struggled but have the better squad and they do not make silly mistakes. When they do create chances it is with purpose. Every time Juve went forward it was always the same pattern, slow and static. Allegri is a terrible coach but that is what you get and learn to enjoy another 3 years of it.

  10. No doubting after tonight that Barella is the real deal and Locatelli is just overrated, lives in his shadow and is another weak made of plastic Juve type player.

  11. So the fake penalty against Torino was not a penalty but this one tonight was definite. Italian football is a joke and no wonder why they couldn’t get to Qatar. Get foreign referees to help the backward farmers asap. Heck send them to another country on a training seminar.

  12. Juventus clearly dominated the game and had one of their best performances this year. They were unlucky not to convert their chances (2 of them hit the crossbar even) but they were robbed. Lautaro should have been sent off and Bastoni’s tackle on Zak was clearly inside the are so that was a a penalty not given to Juve. Inter did absolutely nothing the whole night and won after the terrible decision of the ref to let them shoot the penalty again. Anyone talking about deserved Inter victory is either a troll that hates Juve or needs to take meds to cure his delusions.

  13. The second penalty was given because de Ligt entered the 18 yard box. They need to sell him as he a cumbersome donkey that either handles it or does school boy mistakes like this. Inter don’t make these silly mistakes. Do you see Skriniar sticking his feet out or any of the players having an itch to do so… Juventus were too pumped up and that can take away the need to have a calm head in those moments. Good luck asking Morata and Sandro to do that.

  14. Juve the better side overall, and Allegri actually did attack for a change.

But Inter hung on, especially in the first half, and Skrinniar was very solid. Penalty was soft too. If it happened down the other end the internet would’ve went into meltdown lol.

This really keeps the title race on the edge, and is probably the worst result for Napoli and Milan.

Juve still have a slim chance, but this was a huge blow and probably the end of their hopes. Top 4 is their target now.

Looks like it’s going to the wire.

  15. a tap on the toes ..or 3x elbow to the neck + the Zakharia incident. Serie a VAR is a joke

Enjoyed watching Juventus play with full speed and confidence. Inter was buried for 95 min. 💪 how come it took 30 games to come up with that idea??

  16. Jube is complaining about the repetitive penalty but the truth is the ref was doing them a favor because the ball crossed the line at the first attempt and there is a possibility that it might’ve not gone in at the second.
The Super League scandal has been taking effect over the course of the league. Inter is the first to pull out so the favor is on them.

  17. Juventus played an awesome game should’ve won no question. Happy my Inter got the points tho.
I think it’s a soft penalty but a definite foul no question if it was outside the box and Martinez lucky to stay on, my opinion. Good game from Juve they’ll be back next definitely, as for Inter we need to fix the attack we’re horrible up front.

  18. There are enough tears from juventini to cause a Tsunami. Keep crying, juventini of all people complaining about refereeing is hilarious. I have 1 name for you: Calvarese

  19. Just give Inter the title, it doesn’t matter how poorly they play. The refferes are giving them games and loads of undeserved points. The refs are fighting harder for Inter then the inter players.

  20. These Juventus fans crying that they were robbed by the referee are ether 5 years old, or this is their first football match that they saw, especially Juve’s match. This match was one of the rare ones that the refereeing was not biased for Juve in the last 30 years which I watched them, and I watched them all. It was refereeing performance of the highest caliber, rarely seen in Serie A, especially when Juventus plays.
