Inter director Beppe Marotta insists he would ‘welcome’ PSG striker Mauro Icardi making a move to their Serie A rivals Juventus.

The 28-year-old centre-forward was sold to Paris Saint-Germain in 2019 with a clause limiting his potential return to Italy, precisely because they feared him trying to engineer a move to Turin.

Now that scenario could happen with a possible loan or low-cost transfer in the January window.

“At the moment, Serie A is not the Eldorado that it was in the 1990s, so it’s more of a transitional league where we often see quality players move on,” Marotta told RAI Sport programme 90 Minuto.

“With that in mind, it’s normal that we would welcome the return of important players to Serie A. In any case, it’s not up to me to comment on Icardi, as he is no longer one of our players and we are very happy with our forwards.

“What I can say is that quality players are welcome back in Italy and all of Italian football would benefit from that.”

Icardi is under contract with PSG until June 2024, but managed just three goals in 18 competitive appearances so far this season.

The Argentina international found the net 124 times in 219 games for Inter.

10 thought on “Marotta would ‘welcome’ Icardi move to Juventus”
  1. Marotta is being coy and hoping Juve pick up Icardi so he can add to their mess. Mauro and Wanda to the rescue. Incredible. I hope it happens as it would be massively entertaining.

  2. Juve fan here. I read Inter fans with their antics “desperately” want Icardi to Juve. I can smell their bitterness from the past towards Icardi and their foolishness for treating mediocre Marotta as some kinda God of football. Tbh, I don’t care if Icardi goes back to Italy as it won’t solve Juve’s real problem, which is a non-existent solid playmaker in the team (Dybala is always injured). But if Juve can take them both (Icardi and a playmaker) in this winter, then I can see Marotta and his worshippers will regret his words.

  3. What a terrible player, he’s flopped at PSG. He is soo static, literally offers no movement up front! He’s 29 years old in February, unprofessional and will command massive wages! So basically perfect for Juventus

  4. Dear Susy,

    What`s up with this title?

Are you really not able to read what Marotta said?

First he said he does not comment on Icardi, then he said quality players are welcome back in Italy. Keyword: quality. One could even interpret as subtle dig at Icardi.

@Juve+: If you mean the penalty P$G has to pay in case Icardi joins another Serie A team – that has expired by now. Inter will not charge P$G in case Icardi joins any Italian team.

  5. @Ribas: “mediocre Marotta as some kinda God of football” ?! Really? Who`s a better director in Italy? Marotta single-handedly shifted the power balance in Serie A. He took all the strategic steps to end dominance of Piemonte Calcio and now continues to build on that.

On top of this, he had to deal with unprecedented revenue loss dictated by COVID and superplayers departure, dictated by the Chinese.

Did you know that in summer of 2021 Marotta generated €197.05m income for Inter just from player sales? And the team is STILL on top of the table. This only demonstrates that the choices were correct.

  6. Juve needs a striker for 6 months only – a 6 month loan swap with Arthur would cost nothing and at the end of the season him and Morata can go and make room for the arrival of Vlahovic – once Allegri has a hitman up front then we will see ……..if Juve get’s Icardi it better be before the Supercoppa and if he scores he better celebrate against his old team !!!
