Claudio Ranieri is in negotiations to take over at Premier League club Watford after Xisco Muñoz was fired, according to Sky Sport Italia.

The Hornets announced this morning that Muñoz had parted company with them, because “The Board feels recent performances strongly indicate a negative trend at a time when team cohesion should be visibly improving.”

Watford have many Italian connections, as they are owned by the Pozzo family, who also run Serie A side Udinese.

According to Sky Sport Italia transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, Ranieri is in talks to take over the job at Watford.

The veteran coach turns 70 later this month and is currently out of work, having left Sampdoria at the end of last season.

Ranieri has a long history with English football, going back to Chelsea in 2000-04, most famously winning the Premier League title with Leicester City.

He also returned to England for Fulham, staying there from November 2018 to February 2019, a spell of just 17 games.
