Fiorentina coach Beppe Iachini warns resuming training after May 4 will not be quite so simple. “It’ll be anything except football, especially at the start.”

Minister for Sport Vincenzo Spadafora confirmed today that May 4 is the pencilled-in date to loosen restrictions around the coronavirus pandemic, including the resumption of training for professional athletes.

“We will adapt to whatever they tell us to do, but like everyone else, we are waiting for instructions,” Iachini told Rtv 38.

“Clearly, we won’t be able to train in a normal way and it’ll be anything except football, especially at the start. This is a team sport, but we will initially have to train individually, then in very, very small groups.”

The protocol drawn up by the FIGC suggests regular testing and tracking of the players by keeping them isolated in a training retreat.

However, not all clubs are fully-equipped to deal with those requirements.

“We’ll need to create more rooms in the training grounds, because athletes cannot get changed with more than three in a room. As for the northern clubs, they’ll find it even more difficult to work in their training centres.

“Fiorentina had several players who tested positive for COVID-19, so they will need extra testing, medicals and to initially train at a very slow tempo.”
