Massimo Ambrosini has urged critics of Milan boss Gennaro Gattuso to lay off him. “I really don’t understand what more can be asked of him.”

Gattuso replaced Vincenzo Montella in November 2017 and has proved to be a steady pair of hands for Milan, with the side fourth in Serie A and currently on track for Champions League football next season.

“I really like him, he’s doing an extraordinary job,” Ambrosini, who played alongside ‘Rino’ in the Rossoneri’s midfield, told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I really don’t understand what more can be asked of him. He’s given this group mental strength, awareness and, above all, spirit.

“We need to judge the work of a Coach in relation to a club’s expectations and he’s fully respecting them.

“In addition to results, he was also asked to improve the players in the squad. It seems to me that he’s succeeded on that front.

“An example? Overall I’d say Bakayoko. His growth is absolutely evident when you consider the difficulties he had at the start of the season.”
