The two city rivals will go head-to-head this weekend in the Derby della Lanterna, but it could’ve been very different.

“The incredible thing is that Piatek was the understudy to Kownacki,” Samp President Ferrero told Radio Marte.

“We saw both of them in action and decided to sign Kownacki, because he was the first choice. I hope that Piatek can keep his form up for a long time, so I’ll finally see (Genoa President Enrico) Preziosi smile.

“I hope the Derby can bring a smile to the faces of all the citizens of Genoa.”

While Kownacki is a bright young Polish talent, it’s still veteran Fabio Quagliarella who is getting the goals for Samp.

“His contract runs to the end of the season, but he is in my heart and we’ll meet up after Christmas. In January, we’ll decide together very calmly what to do next. If he wants to stay, then he’ll stay with us. If he wants to leave, we’ll let him go.

“Quagliarella is a champion and that is why he keeps delivering.”
