Roma sporting director Monchi believes Giuseppe Marotta joining Inter “would be positive for Italian football”.

The director was instrumental in Juventus’ revival, but he left the Bianconeri last month and is expected to become general manager for the Nerazzurri.

“He won a lot with Juventus,” Monchi told reporters after today’s Lega Serie A meeting.

“Him staying in Serie A would be a positive thing for Italian football. It’s better for everyone if good professionals stay here.”

Today’s meeting was called to discuss VAR, and the Spaniard also defended Italian referees.

“When I arrived in Italy I always said I was in love with the referees, I think the Italian ones are the top.

“I’m also a defender of VAR, and I think that over the first weeks of the season the balance is positive. There have been mistakes, but we all make mistakes.

“I also think that events like today are good to get everyone’s opinion. I saw that the board were open to the requests of the clubs and that’s important.”
