Future FIGC President Gabriele Gravina declares “we need to get out of the Middle Ages”, and concedes Beppe Marotta may be too expensive for an Italy role.

The Lega Pro President, who stood for election last November, is the only candidate for the new ballot after almost a year of commissionership under Roberto Fabbricini.

“There’s a lot we have to do and there’s no time to waste,” Gravina told Corriere della Sera.

“We need to get out of the Middle Ages and aim for a new humanism. My saying no to [Cosimo] Sibilia last January to avoid the commissionership was a mistake.

“I thought it’d be better to have a commissioner, but I was wrong. But that moment, dramatic as it was, brought us to the point we’re at now.

“Myself, [Renzo] Ulivieri and [Marcello] Nicci met and reached an agreement. Now we hope to reach a broad consensus to give life to the reforms.

“Damiano Tommasi pulling out of the agreement? I’m not disappointed by Damiano, but I’m sorry to verify his schizophrenia and that he was deaf to the opportunity to be part of the renewal.

“His choice was an immoral act.”

Gravina has previously said that he could appoint outgoing Juventus general manager Beppe Marotta as head of Club Italia.

“Club Italia should be treated like a club side, just the same as Juve, Milan or Torino. I’ll be the President, then I’ll need a board of directors.

“Club Italia will be divided into two areas: organisational and technical. Marotta would be the right profile because we’re talking about a great director.

“We met and I was able to personally verify his interest and availability, which is real, but when it comes to the financial parameters I don’t know if a marriage is possible.”
