Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero hopes Gianluigi Buffon will be “saluted by the whole stadium as happened to me”.

The Bianconeri’s all-time top-scorer and appearance-maker bid farewell after the final game of the season against Atalanta in 2012, sparking emotional scenes in Turin.

Having been substituted, Pinturicchio went to sit on the bench but the stadium demanded that he take a final lap of honour, collecting scarves all around the pitch as the game went on in the background.

Buffon is expected to announce his retirement tomorrow, which would make Saturday’s Verona game his final appearance for Juve.

“It would be wonderful if Gigi were to be saluted by the whole stadium as happened to me when I walked around the pitch,” Del Piero told calciomercato.com.

“That wasn’t a polemical gesture, as some people tried to interpret it, but an act of pure thanks to the people who loved me and who I loved.

“Those were the most beautiful years of my life, professionally speaking.”
