Cagliari Coach Diego Lopez defended his squad rotation after a 4-0 hammering at Inter. “It wouldn’t have made much difference.”

The Sardinians rested several players ahead of this weekend’s showdown with Bologna, while Luca Cigarini and Nicolò Barella were suspended.

“We needed fresh legs who could run hard, so we put Niccolò Giannetti on the right,” explained Lopez on Mediaset Premium.

“The game was immediately an uphill struggle, as they scored after three minutes. Even with a first choice XI, it wouldn’t have made much difference. Inter have so much quality and the lads gave their all, but it wasn’t enough.”

Incredibly, Cagliari didn’t have a single shot on goal – let alone on target – and had 27 per cent possession.

“We need to turn the corner quickly and focus on the next match, which is fundamental for us. We didn’t play well, but the lads tried their best.

“With three games in a week, you need to immediately cast it aside and focus on the next.”
