Gian Piero Gasperini views Atalanta’s match with Sampdoria today as the beginning of ‘a new season.’

La Dea have enjoyed another fine campaign under the experienced Coach, reaching the Coppa Italia semi-finals and last 32 of the Europa League.

However, narrow defeats to Juventus and Borussia Dortmund over the last two weeks have brought an end to their participation in cup competitions, leaving them to focus purely on Serie A duties.

And the Bergamo side’s boss is now targeting a top-seven finish and a possible return to European competition next season.

“We now have to begin a new season that lasts for two and a half months,” Gasperini said at a Press conference.

“Until now, it has been a season with a lot of good feelings and excitement. It has been great to compete both in the Europa League and Coppa Italia, playing lots of matches.

“But now we have this new 13-game season that we have to play to the best of our ability.

“This is a very important match and if we do well, we will have a great chance to finish in the top seven.”

Gasperini is unsurprised to find today’s opponents in the hunt for European football.

“I expected to find Samp in the battle for the Europa League because they have done well since the start.

“They have structure, organisation and a team who can aim for those objectives.

“For me it isn’t a surprise, they’ll be there fighting until the end.”
