The area was struck by record snowfall over the last 48 hours, trapping entire communities, and today a person died in an ambulance that couldn’t get through the snow.
A hotel, which used to be part of the Olympic Village for the Winter Olympics in Turin, was hit by an avalanche and around 100 people had to be evacuated.
“We had some very tense hours and the thought in our minds was Rigopiano,” Sorrentino told Sky Sport Italia.
“We were given a miracle compared to them, as all we suffered was a few hours without any light. We were lucky and it was a scary experience.”
On January 18, 2017, a four-star hotel in Rigopiano, Abruzzo, was struck by an avalanche, killing 29 people and injuring 11 others.
“The roads were totally blocked. We tried to leave, but they advised us to stay in the hotel. We slept in our ski clothes with skis and personal effects next to us, so we could run away if needed.
“I am very happy to be here talking about it, but I expected a very different vacation.”
