A Greek newspaper has accused ‘Mafia’ of denying PAOK a late Europa League penalty against Fiorentina.

The Group J match at Toumba Stadium ended in a goalless draw, but not before referee Slavko Vincic failed to award a spot-kick when Garry Rodrigues’ cross struck Gonzalo Rodriguez’s arm.

As such, Greek daily Arena Press published the headline ‘Mafia’ in reference to organised crime groups that have historically plagued the south of Italy. This is despite the fact that replays of the incident have shown it would have been harsh to award a penalty.

With the Mafia stereotype deeply offensive in Italy, there may be action taken against the publication.
