The 40-year-old Italian is currently coaching Major League Soccer club Miami FC, and his debut on the bench saw him picking up a 1-1 draw against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers.

The player was asked by the Gazzetta dello Sport about Milan's projected reformation and the possible sacking of Mihajlovic.

“I've said this before, the coaches should never take 100 per cent of the blame,” Nesta replied. “It's been a bad year that can be saved only with a victory in the Coppa Italia.

“But I wouldn't fire the Coach, or they'll have to start everything again. It's clear that there are other problems too.”

The bygone defender also discussed other teams in Serie A, such as Inter and his former club Lazio.

“Inter have a project. They signed new players and spent a lot of money, even though they came short of results.

“I had [Coach Roberto] Mancini as a teammate and, briefly, as a Coach. He's good. When you keep signing ten players, it's understandable that one year you get seven of them right and the next you only get four.

“Lazio had a tough season and they even fired [Coach Stefano] Pioli. That's because in Italy, as I was saying, when things go bad it's always the Coach who takes the blame. The President and the footballers are never sent home.

“The championship is already decided, especially after Napoli's crash and the suspension of [Gonzalo] Higuain.

“I said as much at the end of the summer, even though their initial difficulties gave me pause. The Bianconeri are the strongest.”
