Riccardo Montolivo admits “there isn’t much to salvage” from Italy’s 4-1 friendly defeat to Germany.

“There isn’t much to salvage from tonight. We expected a different performance and result, obviously, but we weren’t acting triumphant before and won’t act as if it’s a disaster tonight,” he told Rai Sport.

“We did face the best team in the world and there is a gap. We made some big mistakes and were distracted at key moments, so at this level you pay for those errors.

“I had the chance to get us back into it when it was 2-0 and I didn’t get it right. Some things that went well against Spain did not work this evening.

“The Coach will evaluate and each of us try to give our all on the field to show we deserve this jersey. The Coach will make the right choices so we can have a competitive Euros.”
