It was reported yesterday that La Viola were refusing to let Montella go for less than €3m and that no real progress was being made between the two clubs.
Luigi Del Neri, Eugenio Corini, Francesco Guidolin and Walter Mazzarri have been touted as alternatives, but SampNews24 report today that Yakin has entered the fray.
The website believes that the club has opened talks with the former Basel boss who was the predecessor to Paulo Sousa at the Swiss club.
During his time there, Yakin won two league titles and took Basel to the Europa League semi-finals, and he was in charge of Spartak Moscow last season before departing in the summer.
The report says that the Samp hierarchy are keen to conclude negotiations as soon as possible.
