Sampdoria have officially sacked Walter Zenga after less than half a year on the bench.

The 2-0 defeat to Fiorentina proved fatal to the Coach. Sunday's protests by the tifosi, asking for Zenga to be thrown out, were followed yesterday by a summit involving President Massimo Ferrero among others.

The decision was made today to sack Zenga, as confirmed by the club through an official statement.

"Sampdoria announce that Walter Zenga has been relieved of his duties as Coach of the first team," it read.

"We are sorry for the early conclusion of professional relationship, the President Massimo Ferrero and the whole club wish Zenga the greatest of luck for his future career."

Former Fiorentina Coach Vincenzo Montella is the favourite to succeed Zenga, as an agreement has reportedly already been reached with him.

However, a clause in Montella's Viola contract means that a player exchange has been suggested in order to acquire the Coach's signature.
