Empoli’s sporting director says no-one will leave the club in January – including Daniele Rugani.

Empoli’s sporting director says no-one will leave the club in January – including Daniele Rugani.

The defender is co-owned by the Tuscan side and Juventus, and the Bianconeri’s injury worries had led to speculation that the 20-year-old could move to Turin in January, but Marcello Carli has refuted those rumours.

“None of our major players will leave in January,” the sporting director told Tuttomercatoweb.

“When we’re trying to achieve certain goals, it wouldn’t make sense for us to lose any of our big players. Our best players will remain.

“Does that include Rugani? Absolutely.

“I don’t know where this talk of Juventus has come from. Juventus have not ever asked for him in January.”

Empoli have been Serie A’s surprise package this season, with the newly-promoted side sitting 13th in the table after a 2-2 draw with Napoli on Sunday, but Carli warns that Maurizio Sarri’s side have a long way to go.

“This team has confirmed its identity. The goal of staying up is achievable.

“Yesterday we played well, and we showed our resilience at the end because we could well have lost.

“It’s hard to give an assessment. This level was unknown to us after five years in Serie B. We’ve tried to maintain our style of play, never sitting in and being defensive, even against the big teams.

“We’re on the right track, but if we think we’ve already achieved anything we’re wrong. For the moment we’ve shown we’re good enough for this level.”
