Former Roma Coach Carlo Mazzone sees a ‘spectacular’ clash between his old side and Bayern Munich, as he speaks of influence on Pep Guardiola.

Mazzone coached the current Bayern boss at Brescia, with the Spaniard describing the 77-year-old as a ‘maestro’.

“One characteristic he got from me? Picking quality players,” Mazzone has told today’s Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I prefer this to any particular aspect on the field. People who say Guardiola only wins because he has great players are making a big mistake, or at best minimising what he does.

“Who chose those players? You see, Coaches are divided into two camps – those who love the technical side of the game, and those who love the physical side.

“If someone buys two giants, it becomes hard to believe he wants to play the ball on the ground does it not?

“You see, both Pep and I love technical players, and our teams have always had possession at the heart of their game.”

Mazzone believes that Roma Coach Rudi Garcia also falls into the same category, and believes the game at the Olimpico will be something special.

“It’s an open game, because Garcia falls into the category of Coaches who love quality football.

“Who will win will be decided by a moment of magic from one of the many champions on the field.

“As a Coach, I’m curious to see who will control the match, who will take the game by the scruff of the neck.

“I’d bet on one thing – It will be a spectacular match.”
