The 34-year-old hasn’t played since the opening League game of the season because of an eye problem.

And given that his contract is set to expire in the summer, there have been suggestions that he could move on or even quit the game completely.

“The people who know me are aware that I live for football,” he told Milan Channel. “I’m 34 and I’m too young to retire.

“I miss the adrenaline of action and I’m even prepared to play for free – I’ve already told Vice-President Adriano Galliani that.

“It is not a question of money, I just want to get back to doing what I love.”

Gattuso is suffering with an optical nerve issue that requires an unspecified amount of time to fully heal.

“If it was up to me then I’d be back on the pitch right now, but I need to see what the doctors say,” he continued.

“My illness is strange and a hard one to defeat.”
