Napoli boss Walter Mazzarri has admitted that he made an error in starting new signing Eduardo Vargas against Cesena.

The January arrival from Universidad de Chile was named in the starting XI for Thursday’s Coppa Italia win against Cesena.

However, the Chilean was replaced at the break after a quiet first half by former Inter man Goran Pandev. The latter netted a late winner in the 2-1 triumph.

“I got caught up in the euphoria,” Mazzarri told the Gazzetta dello Sport. “I was wrong to select Vargas so soon.

“A Coach at this level should know when the time is right to field certain players. The game has certainly provided me with some food for thought.”

Vargas, a 22-year-old Chilean attacker, is expected to be amongst the substitutes when the Azzurri face Bologna in Monday night’s Serie A game.
