Roma converted a pair of penalties to win 2-0 in controversial circumstances, although few would deny that they deserved their victory.

Lazio-leaning journalists pressed Ranieri in his post-match Press Conference about the standard of refereeing, which they believe conditioned the game.

"The derby confirms that results don't depend so much on quality or what you express on the pitch, but by episodes," Lotito said.

"At least now you can no longer say that Lazio have been lucky.

"I have great respect for the institutions and I don't want to pass any judgement on the referees, otherwise you risk destabilising the system.

"I went into the dressing room to compliment my players after the game. They were pained by the defeat, which they thought was undeserved and ungenerous."
