Olivier Giroud has signed the Milan contract and said goodbye to Chelsea, although debate continues over the exact transfer fee. ‘I’m starting a new journey with a light and happy heart.’

The forward completed the transfer for €1m plus up to another €1m in add-ons, which are based on the club’s Champions League qualification and the number of appearances he makes over the course of the season.

There continue to be English reports that the fee is £2m (€2.3m) plus significant add-ons, but the Italian media are all absolutely adamant about the figures involved.

Milan would also not pay that amount for a player they had agreed personal terms with when he was a free agent, before Chelsea activated their unilateral clause to extend his contract, as it was set to expire on June 30.

He signed a two-year contract today, with an option for a third year, at Casa Milan.

The France international also sent a message to Chelsea via social media.

“To all the Blues, to my teammates, to all my coaches, to the whole club, a huge thank you for these special moments,” wrote Giroud.

“I’m starting a new journey with a light and happy heart. Our victories in FA Cup, Europa League and Champions league have been magnificent. Love, Oli G.”

After signing the contract, he flew back to France and will return to begin pre-season training with Stefano Pioli and his new Rossoneri teammates on July 26.
