Genoa have dismissed head coach Alexander Blessin and temporarily appointed Primavera coach Alberto Gilardino to replace him.

The Ligurian outfit currently sit 5th in the Serie B table, nine points behind league leaders Frosinone. The team suffered relegation under Blessin last season after finishing 19th in Serie A and they’re desperate to immediately bounce back to the Italian topflight.

As highlighted by Calciomercato.com, Genoa have now dismissed Blessin after 33 games in charge and promoted Gilardino, who was the Primavera coach, in his place. It’s unclear if this will be a long-term solution or if a new coach will be brought in.

The 49-year-old Blessin took over at Genoa in January 2022 and oversaw 33 matches before being dismissed. In that time, he averaged 1.36 points per match and was unable to help the club avoid relegation.

Gilardino is the latest member of Italy’s 2006 World Cup winning squad to ply his trade his Serie B, joining former teammates like Pippo Inzaghi, Fabio Grosso, Fabio Cannavaro and Daniele De Rossi in the dugouts of the second division.
