171 Juventus supporters have been sanctioned under the Daspo measure after Romelu Lukaku was subjected to racist abuse from some supporters at the Allianz Stadium during the Coppa Italia semi-final first leg on April 4.

Daspo (Divieto di Accedere alle manifestazioni Sportive) is a measure implemented by Italian authorities intended to prevent violence and anti-social behaviour surrounding sporting events.

The result of the investigation into the incidents surrounding the cup clash by Digos in Turin found that 250 Juventus fans were identified to have hurled racist abuse at Lukaku.

The Belgian had converted a 95th minute penalty to draw the scores level during the semi-final first leg, before being shown a second yellow card for his celebration, which the referee considered to be a provocation of the Juve fans, despite his having done exactly the same in several games previously.

Despite Inter’s initial appeal over Lukaku’s suspension being rejected, FIGC President Gabriele Gravina made a personal exception and overruled the Court of Appeal’s decision to allow the Chelsea loanee to play in the return leg at San Siro.

The 171 supporters who have been recognised as instigators of the racist chanting will be hit with fines for violating the regulations surrounding orderly behaviour in football stadiums.

Further investigations to identify the remainder of the responsible Juventus fans are still underway.

The investigation also revealed an incident during the first half of the game between Juventus and Inter, in which large sections of the Nerazzurri supporters were heard chanting “Liverpool, Liverpool” in clear reference to the Heysel Stadium tragedy.
